Recently, a group of apparel development students from both Apex and Cary high school took a 3-day trip to New York City to further explore the world of fashion. Considering NYC is officially ranked the #1 fashion capital of the world, it was the perfect location to tour and visit. Once the students arrived in the city, they visited and toured the world’s largest department store: Macy’s. A manager of the store told them the history of the store as well as the unique marketing strategies that the owner used to help make the store such a success. Following that, they went shopping along famous streets such as 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, spotting popular stores like Bloomingdale’s along the way. Throughout the trip, they shopped, visited professional jewelry and costume design studios, roamed Times Square, visited fashion exhibits and museums, and even saw Cinderella on Broadway. One of their favorite activities (besides shopping) was definitely visiting the Izquierdo Costume Design Studio. There, they saw how and where designers created famous costumes for movies, concerts, and fashion shows; most of the students were mainly excited to see a pair of angel wings used in one of the past Victoria’s Secret Annual Fashion Shows. Sophomore Rose Quince stated, “My favorite part of the trip was observing the lifestyles of New Yorkers and shopping.” Overall, the students felt that this trip was an absolutely amazing experience. Anyone interested in fashion, whether they want to make a career out of it or not, would have an incredible time. If you are interested in having a future career in fashion, this trip is definitely helpful. You will learn how costumes are designed and made as well as how successful companies market their merchandise. If you’re an interested apparel student, the next trip will take place in the late winter of 2016.
