There are inexpensive colleges that also provide adjustable schedules for those with jobs. Some schools in the area are Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, University of Phoenix in Raleigh, and Miller-Motte Technical College in Cary, all of which offer online and on campus courses. These schools provide a variety of options for certifications and associate through doctorate degree programs. These schools also provide a basis to start your education if you later decide to transfer to another school.

For those looking to get right into the work field, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists projected growth rates of occupations from 2012-2022, and not all the jobs require college education, but they may require further certifactions.

Personal care aids, with the second highest projected growth rate of 49%, offers on the job training. Personal care aids help others with everyday tasks and provide companionship. Some states require completion of training programs from home health care agencies.

Mechanical insulation requires a 4-year apprenticeship and has a projected growth of 47%. This job includes installing and replacing insulation to buildings. There is a voluntary certification and those that handle asbestos must receive training through an accredited program.

The top five non-degree programs and their average pay are personal care aids at $20,000, home health aides at $21,000, mechanical insulation workers at $39,000, construction laborers or helpers at $30,000, and segmental pavers at $35,000.

Working, an internship, or an apprenticeship can help a person gain professional experience and will be useful when applying for future jobs.

Don’t give up on the option of starting a well planned out business. You may just become the next Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Walt Disney, or Oprah Winfrey.

Other careers to consider include being an artist, housekeeper, high end waiter/waitress, chef, retail salesperson, secretary, or truck driver. There are also blue collar jobs that cannot be outsourced such as plumbing and electricians.
