Apex mock election

Matt Wotus
Editor-in-Chief

The Apex High student body will participate in a mock election this Thursday, November 1, during homeroom. Students will have the opportunity to vote for the next North Carolina governor, as well as the next President of the United States. The idea came to Apex social studies teacher Amy Ernenwein while she was teaching a freshmen class. She asked her students if they cared about the election, and when the response was no, she decided to hold an election for students. “It is the number one job of a social studies teacher to teach them [students] their civic duties,” Ernenwein said.

She added that she is worried about voter apathy nowadays. “I think that we think the individual person doesn’t have much power on a large scale,” she said. “Democracies work best when citizens actively participate and are informed,” Ernenwein added.

Ernenwein said that she will be counting the ballots herself and hopes to announce the results to students on Wednesday, November 7, during homeroom, the day after the national election.

The second presidential debate had Obama and Romney facing off at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, on October 16. The debate, moderated by CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley, was held in a town hall style with an audience comprising of 80 undecided New York voters.

Giants out to a 2-0 lead

The San Francisco Giants eyed their second World Series title in three years, as they kicked off the 108th edition of the Fall Classic on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday at AT&T Park.

Amazingly, these two storied franchises have never met in the World Series, despite this being the 19th trip for the Giants and the Tigers' 11th appearance. However, this is only the fifth time the Giants will be playing in this round since the team moved from New York to San Francisco.

Of course, the Giants' last trip to the World Series resulted in the franchise's first title since 1954, beating the Texas Rangers in five games in 2010.

This time around San Francisco enters the Fall Classic with a ton of momentum following a thrilling seven-game win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, which saw a rally from a 3-1 series deficit.
In last Monday's clincher, Matt Cain (2-2) scattered five hits and one walk over 5 2/3 scoreless innings and even drove in a run during the 9-0 rout, while Hunter Pence drove in a pair with a fortunate broken-bat double during a five-run third inning. Fellow midseason acquisition Marco Scutaro capped his NLCS MVP performance with his sixth multi-hit game of the series.

Resiliency has been the Giants' calling card this October, as they also became the first team in NL history to rally back from an 0-2 deficit and win a Division Series, beating the Cincinnati Reds in five games.
