Weird, wacky, worldwide news

Grace Fendrick

  • It is graduation season for many people, including 99 year-old Jessie Rose White. After completing courses for stenography and bookkeeping at Beal College in Bangor in 1939, she was unable to pay the $5 diploma fee. A friend of White, after hearing of her academic misfortune, paid the fee for her this year. When she received her diploma she said that she was “delighted.” She hopes to seek further education through the internet, as she is in a wheel-chair due to polio.
  • Half sisters, 85-year-old Zelda Gates and 94-year-old Rita Knight, met for the first time just outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gates was unaware she had a half-sister until reading her father’s will. After spending so many years apart from one another they finally met this Memorial Day weekend; they even discovered that they shared some family traits.
  • Suspected vampire burial grounds were discovered in northwestern Poland. It was clear that it was a vampire grave because the teeth had been removed, a leg nailed to the coffin (to keep the body from rising), and a stone which was placed in the mouth. This myth will never die.
  • We have all figured out who the tooth-fairy is, it’s but do you know about the “weed fairy”? Yeni Sleidi, or @danksyappleweed on Twitter, is the national “weed fairy,” who got the nickname by pinning posters saying “These are tough times. Take this WEED. And keep your spirits high” with free weed attached. Although marijuana is legal in Seattle, some are worried that it will get into the hands of people under the age of 21.
  • The cast of the hit TV show The Wonder Years reunited on May 28. There were many photos taken. Although they were older, there was still a very prominent resemblance to their younger selves.

Apex sees budget increase, unveils new electric charging stations

Adam Mancini

The charging station in downtown Apex
The town of Apex continues to grow at an impressive rate. Town Manager Bruce Radford has proposed a $38.9 million budget for the fiscal year, beginning on July 1, which would mark a $2.9 million increase over last year’s budget. Better yet, tax payers would not see an increase, as Apex would instead rely on the expectation of continued economic growth to pay for new town employees and features.

Google’s new driverless cars are becoming more and more popular on the streets of California where they have been test driving the car.  Modifying the Toyota Prius to operate as a Google driverless car has turned a corner on technology for Google.  After it passed the test course on mountain roads, the goal has now shifted to mastering city street driving.

Spice up your love life

Dating is a necessary life experience.  Once you’ve identified your “dating target”, choosing the perfect spot can be difficult.  The best thing to do is find a common interest that involves high activity, and a place to just sit and talk.
When doing high energy level activities, your body releases dopamine.  Dopamine is a hormone that plays an important role in the human body and brain.  It triggers feelings of happiness and fondness, almost that of a high.  That’s why, when choosing a date spot, it’s important to include something active, as well as a nice quiet place to get to know someone better.
I know what you’re thinking, where can I take my significant other, the love of my life, and perhaps even my soul mate for a great time that is not too costly?
Well, here are some options:

Media reports everything but the news

Michael Lyday
Editor-in-Chief

When you log onto your favorite news site or turn on your preferred 24-hour news network, you find anything but the news. Rather than information about the breaking news story of the day, you instead hear opinion and speculation. If you look to Fox News for coverage of a shooting, you are met with unhinged nitwits warning you that your guns are going to be taken away. If you look to MSNBC for coverage of the same event you see the same concept, but this time disseminating the idea that guns are evil. People look to the news for facts, but only receive propaganda that the network overseers wish to program into as many brains as they can get to watch the screen.

Texting 911 may soon be possible.  The Federal Communications Commission has created a new program called Text-to-911 which allows text messages to be sent to 911 operators instead of a voice call. All four major service providers which include Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint all committed to providing the service to certain locations by May 15.  The FCC has required that all service providers have the service by the end of 2014.

Boys and girls track teams impress at state meet

Natalia Ghan
Staff Writer

The boys become state runner-ups.
The Mideast Regional Meet on May 10, 2014 sizzled with tight competition under the warm sun. As Coach Paul Lockwood describes, “the record book was rewritten.” In addition to the boys placing first and the girls fourth, Apex saw many athletes advance to the state meet under sometimes trying circumstances.

Senior Joe DeVries qualified for states in pole vault despite a broken wrist, alongside his junior teammates Michael Utecht and Drew Pedersen.  DeVries recounts his first event when he suffered the injury. “I tripped over a hurdle someone had knocked into my lane; fell, rolled back up, went under the next hurdle, over the last, and finished...I was disqualified because going under hurdles is illegal.” After the injury, DeVries was undeterred from competing in States. “The doctor said it’s going to hurt, but I can do it if I tape it up,” he said. Coach Mark Trezona reflected on the meet positively. “I was pleased when [our vaulters] qualified. Regionals is not necessarily a great performance meet but an advancement meet.”

Apex High teachers take a stand

Apex teachers protest along Laura Duncan Road
Red outfits, colorful signs, and nearly 60 Apex High School staff lined the sidewalks of Laura Duncan Road on Wednesday. Teachers were protesting “To make the public aware; what we’re [mainly] concerned about is the exodus of teachers in state,” said the organizer of the event Gregg Thomas. Low pay, the removal of tenure and additional pay for advanced degrees, and an overall lack of respect for the profession were among the other reasons for the protest.
Coach Forrest Moog participates
in the protest
The rally occurred before school, as they, “were following all the rules to permit us to protest and still do our job,” said Thomas. This demonstrates how much teachers of Apex High School care about their students.
“It was great, we were very fortunate,” Thomas said regarding the media coverage, including WRAL, WTVD, and the News & Observer. Although Principal Matthew Wight was not a part of the protest he backs his teachers fully saying, “I absolutely support them one-hundred percent.” Wight believes that the teachers took an essential step in improving the system saying, “They have met with legislators voicing their concerns, but to make a public display of their concerns is really important.”

Megan Fackler-Bretz, Tim Kane, and Amy Ernenwein
As North Carolina is ranked 46th in the nation for average teacher pay, there is a definite need for reform.
The protest occurred after the shocking news that 612 educators have left midyear in Wake County, which is the largest teacher turnover rate in five years. Governor Pat McCrory hopes to address these issues through his long term plan, “Career Pathways for Teachers.” Some Wake County citizens do not believe any changes are necessary; however, when asked how he would respond to the naysayers Thomas said, “I think the people who are critical don’t know about education.

Another win for North Carolina

On Thursday, 10.5 million watched Asheville native Caleb Johnson take the crown as the Season 13 winner of American Idol.  The 23 year old rocker stunned the crowd with his voice and song choices throughout the season, his most memorable including his original song “As Long As You Love Me” and his performance of Aerosmith’s “Dream On”.  The other finalist, 17 year old Jena Irene, also had plenty of memorable performances including Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and Radiohead’s “Creep”.  Johnson’s win marks the third win for North Carolina on American Idol.
Past North Carolina winners are Fantasia (Season 3) and Scotty McCreery (Season 10).  Other N.C. top 12 finalists include singer turned politician Clay Aiken, country star Kellie Pickler, and rocker Chris Daughtry.
Performances from the American Idol finale included Demi Lovato singing her hit “Heart Attack” with the top 12 girls, KISS, John Legend performing with top 12 finalist Malaya Watson, Aloe Blacc, and Jason Mraz performing with top 12 finalist Alex Preston.  Ryan Seacrest also performed, surprising the audience by singing alongside Richard Marx to Marx’s song “Right Here Waiting.”  This year is the first time the number of votes were not announced.  The slipping ratings of American Idol and other singing shows continue to be problematic and may result in changes for next season.

Godzilla returns

Marley Shattuck
Staff Writer

A modern remake of the legendary Godzilla premiered over the weekend on Friday, May 16, taking in a whopping $93.2 million in ticket sales. The action-packed film featured a few highly proclaimed actors such as Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad. Cranston gave an excellent, convincing performance as the ‘crazy’ man whose unruly theories actually ended up being true. In addition to him, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson did an outstanding job of portraying the main character, Cranston’s son who works hard to help save both his family and the city from disaster. Even the actors with smaller roles in the film demonstrated admirable acting capability.
The movie puts a twist on the classic Godzilla story, adding in a new creature for the enormous monster to take on. The new creature, appropriately named a Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism (M.U.T.O.), was the real threat in the film as it was the one to primarily decimate parts of the United States as well as Japan and Europe. In fact, while the movie was titled ‘Godzilla,’ its focus seemed to be centered on the new monster instead. Although this was one of the movie’s few weaknesses, factors such as the visual effects were incredible and highly compelling. The explosions, attack scenes, and city destruction come to life right before your eyes. Godzilla itself as well as the M.U.T.O. creature were convincingly realistic.
Although the non-stop action of the movie was slightly overwhelming, overall it was an exciting, fast-paced, riveting film that you don’t want to miss. Take a nice break from work and school to see this movie.

Tips for future success

Mariane Ghazaleh
Staff Writer

High school is an unforgettable time for many people. Good or bad, there are many life experiences packed into the four years. It’s always good to start each year with a little bit of advice. Let’s take a look at what current high school students have to say to the upcoming classes.

RISING FRESHMAN: The transition from middle school to high school can be a big one. Apex Legacy asked some rising sophomores what they learned their freshman year and what they think you should know coming in.
  • “Do your work. Don’t skip,” says Blaize Ward. You want to start your first year on the right foot. Set goals and foster good habits that will help you throughout your four years.
  • “If you don’t do your homework, you fail,” Skylar Gnann bluntly states. Homework does count for a grade in most classes. Do the little things right and you will be surprised at how well you do in class.
  • “Get gym over with” advises Timmy Breaton. It’s a basic requirement for graduation. Don’t put it off for another year; otherwise, you won’t be able to take electives you really enjoy.
  • “Bring your own chair,” says Ismail Khan. OK, he’s just kidding, but Apex High is pretty crowded, so get used to big classes. You may not know everyone, but your freshman year is a great time to start building new friendships.

Make your dorm feel like home

Shauna Hines
Features Editor

College can be an exciting experience. Living away from home for the first time can result in homesickness even if you’re only 30 minutes away from home. Here are some tips to make your dorm a home away from home.

Even if you can’t move the furniture around, there are ways to personalize your room. Hanging posters and lights and adding color to the drab white walls will make any room feel more inviting. Bring pictures of family and friends to hang in frames or on a cork board. Do be mindful of how you hang items because many buildings do not want nails in the walls; instead use adhesive wall hooks that remove cleanly.

Comfort is another key factor to make your dorm feel like home. So make your bedding, furniture, and floor as comfortable as possible. Add a mattress pad to your bed for extra support and cushioning for a good night’s sleep.  A comfy chair in the corner of the room may be useful to help unwind from a stressful day. Rugs add character and comfort to the cold floors.

The lighting often synced with the beat of the music, making the onstage band not only sound, but look incredible.

Project Ara to revolutionize smartphone industry

Zane Muzzillo
Staff Writer

Google’s latest endeavor, Project Ara, is bringing something never before seen to the smartphone industry. The company is developing a modular smart phone, which will allow you to change out parts of your phone as they become outdated and obsolete. This design will also allow you to build a custom phone that fits your budget. Google has incorporated magnets into the new phone so you can slip out any component from the camera to the processor. If you break the screen you would have the ability to pop it off and replace it with a new one. The phones design is based on Phonebloks, an independent phone design made by Dave Hakkens. Google partnered with Hakkens to combine his designing ability with their manufacturing power.

The phone will come in three sizes, a 2x5 inch model, a 3x6 inch model, and a 4x7 inch model. Google is also undercutting its competitors’ prices, which will start at $50, one-fourth the cost of the high end smart phones currently on the market. Google is planning on releasing the phone early 2015.

Summer page turners

Marley Shattuck
Staff Writer

For a lot of students, reading can be a total drag and completely tedious. However, there’s actually a wide selection of riveting, enjoyable books that teens will love (when they give it a chance). In fact, here’s a list of some great Young Adult fiction books that will keep you reading all summer:

1.      The Divergent Series: This three part dystopian series (Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant) tells the story of a teenage girl escaping her family’s plain, selfless faction to join the daring environment of the Dauntless faction. It’s exciting, intense, and romantic all at once; you’ll never want to put it down.
2.       The Fault in our Stars: TFIOS, soon to be released as a film, is the not-so-average love story of a 16-year-old girl with thyroid cancer who quickly catches the eye of a quirky, cute seventeen-year-old boy. This page-turner is adorable, tear-jerking, and is sure to make you fall in love with the characters and their story.
3.       The Maze Runner: Can you imagine waking up with not a single memory in a secluded field enclosed in a colossal maze with dozens of strangers? For Thomas, this is his reality; he has to find a way to escape the maze and (hopefully) remember how he and his fellow ‘Gladers’ got there. This mystery novel will leave you wanting answers and keep you fully engaged.
4.       The Hunger Games Series: The highly proclaimed Hunger Games movies were based off of this intense three-part book saga. The plot follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen and the hardships she faces after she volunteers to save her sister and take part in the 74th annual Hunger Games: a fight to the death for ages 12-18. Take a journey through Katniss’ mind as she faces her toughest challenge yet: staying alive.

These are just a few of the many captivating titles out there. Instead of watching TV or spending the day online, read a good book! Not only is it educational, but it’s an entertaining way to pass the time.

Plan in the works to bring home Nigerian girls

Marley Shattuck
Staff Writer

The kidnappings and attacks by the Boko Haram Islamist group last month have left a quite unsettling atmosphere across the town of Chibok and most of Nigeria. Residents watched a disturbing video of some captured girls released by a French news agency, Agence France-Presse. The video shows roughly 100 girls on the ground, dressed in traditional Islamic clothing, forcibly chanting “Praise to be Allah, the lord of the world.” In the 27-minute video, the alleged leader Abubakar Shekau said he would release the girls only when the imprisoned members of Boko Haram are freed. However, at a later briefing, the director of the National Orientation Agency stated that other negotiations could be a possibility for rescuing the kidnapped girls. Director Mike Omeri said, “The government of Nigeria will continue to explore all options for the release and safe return of our girls back to their respective homes.”

An Oklahoma death row inmate, Clayton Lockett, writhed in pain as he lay dying, strapped to a gurney as prison officials lowered the blinds in the room to prevent those in the viewing gallery from witnessing the horror that was unfolding in the death chamber. It was a botched execution. Google expands affordable delivery service

Zane Muzzillo

Google is expanding a membership program to make shopping much easier for customers. If you live in Manhattan or west Los Angeles, Google will deliver online purchases to your front door the day the order is placed for a $5 fee. The service was first launched in San Francisco last year. West L.A. and Manhattan residents will be able to get anything they want from Costco, L'Occitane, Staples, Target, Walgreens and Babies "R" Us through the service. Google is planning to expand this service to the rest of New York City, but they are going to start with Manhattan for now and has a website, www.google.com/shopping/express, dedicated to its one day shipping service.

Google’s same day delivery is cheaper than Amazon’s, which is $5.99 per order. On top of that, it requires an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $100 a year.  For non-Prime members same day delivery fee is $10 for the first item and $0.98 per each additional item. EBay also has a stake in the same day delivery service market, and delivers to San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, San Jose and parts of NYC. For $5, you can order items from Target, Urban Outfitters, Best Buy and Macy's, but there is a $25 minimum order.
