For this year’s Lip Dub the art department looked to create a sad 80’s prom scene, such as ones seen in movies like Pretty in Pink. The song they’ve chosen, “Come on Eileen,” was written by English pop group Dexys Midnight Runners. Lip Dub director and senior, Katelynn Whitehead, said she chose the song because, “They played the song at prom last year and it was the song that everyone got up and danced for.” Whitehead wanted to unite the school and have a Lip Dub that everyone could get behind. “We really wanted to relate this to everyone and not just art and theater kids.”

"Bueller... Bueller..."
The Lip Dub tells the story of Johnny, the male lead role, who is looking for his prom date Eileen. He stumbles through a large crowd and eventually finds his love. After finding Eileen they dance past notable characters from the movies The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and eventually into Duckie, from Pretty in Pink. Played by junior Josh Menzies, Duckie proceeds to dance while lip synching along with the song. After Duckie finishes his part the focus changes to several groups of people having their pictures taken by the prom photographer, much like an actual prom. It leads to the whole cast, including the crowd from the beginning and people getting their pictures taken, dancing and having a good time. The theme was a huge part of this year’s Lip Dub. “Last year’s theme was big fun and this year’s is wiggly jiggly jamboree,” said Whitehead.

The two lead roles, Johnny and Eileen, were played by junior Will Stapleton and senior Sarah Crowley. “It’s phenomenal, I think that the depth that we can give to the characters is unique to this project and I really enjoy the individual work we can all do for our individual characters,” said Stapleton about the theme. Crowley has similar opinions saying, “I think it’s awesome and it’s really uniting everyone in the school, and everyone wants a cheesy 80’s prom.”

Lip Dub is run by Fox50, a local news station, and offers much needed money for the art department. The public votes online for the winner of the Lip Dub. “We are going to get other schools in Apex like Apex Middle and Apex Elementary and hopefully the downtown council; we really want to make this a community thing.”
