Fresh Advice

There are a lot of unknowns for incoming freshmen, including a new school, new people, and a newfound sense of freedom. Thankfully, there are plenty of people around who know what it is like to be in those shoes. Apex’s upperclassmen were willing to help, and volunteered all sorts of advice for the Class of 2018.
Freshman Year
  • Freshman year is so important! I would just keep in mind that this year is a sort of transition year. It's the time to figure out what path you want to take as far as your classes and what clubs or sports or societies you want to join. But, it should still be taken seriously. This is a time to figure out methods that will help you succeed. What study habits and note taking styles do you prefer? One needs to remember that this year will still count in your high school career. You need to try your best, stay disciplined and work hard!”
  • “Grades do matter, but you shouldn’t stress about them TOO much. Take some fun classes along the way and always make sure you have at least one class each year that you really look forward to.”
  • “Do NOT procrastinate. I know we all do it, but if you can delay the bad habit now, it will help keep you motivated to survive high school.”
Friends
  • “You are not going to get along with everyone; don’t force friendships or relationships. You will be with these people for four years, it will just be awkward.”
  • “Make sure you trust the right people and don’t let relationships distract you from your goals.”
  • “Make friends with upperclassmen. They will help you and answer any questions you may have about school. They look intimidating at first, but they really don’t mind helping you.”
  • “You are not guaranteed a parking spot junior year… be good friends with someone who lives close [to you].”
Being Yourself
  • “You need to be yourself, but also try new things and get involved!”
  • “...Be an individual, if you want it, you will work for it. Just because you aren’t doing as well as your peers in a class does not mean you are less intelligent…”
  • “Do what you like to do.  Stop with the middle school deal of copying the trends that you see the majority [of people] doing, be it classes, interests, or types of clothing.  Just have fun and do you, because you are awesome and no one should question that.”

Most importantly, don’t wish your time at Apex away. They are some of the best years of your life, and before you know it they will be over.
