Nissan experiments with self-cleaning car paint

Don’t want to wash your car? Well, soon you may not have to. Nissan has created the world’s first self-cleaning car by testing a new super-hydrophobic and oleophobic paint, which means it repels water and oil. It is currently being tested on the company’s Nissan Note.

This finish, called Ultra-Ever Dry, was developed by the Nissan Technical Center in the United Kingdom and serves as a layer of air between the car’s paint and the environment in order to prevent water, mud, and road spray from sticking to the car. Nissan is not currently using the paint on standard production vehicles, but the company is considering offering the coating as an aftermarket option.

Ultra-Ever Dry is currently being sold by UltraTech International for industrial use, but is not yet available to individual consumers.
