Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army Ranger who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan over four years, signed a rookie free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles as a defensive lineman. The Eagles picked up Villanueva after noticing him at a regional combine in Detroit.

Villanueva last played football in 2009 during his senior season at West Point where he played as a wide receiver, catching five touchdown passes. Other positions played during his career include defensive line and left tackle, where he started all 12 games for the Black Knights in 2008. After graduating, Villanueva was commissioned as a lieutenant in the infantry and sent to Afghanistan, where he won numerous medals and awards for valor in combat.

If he does not make an NFL roster at season’s start, the 25 year old plans to return to Afghanistan for a fourth tour of duty in September.
