Making the most of your summer

Instead of lounging at the pool or beach all summer long, make the most out of your summer with these fun activities that you can do with friends and family. Fun for all ages, these activities will ensure that you make meaningful memories with those you love most during the sunny season.

Make your own ice cream
  1. Make homemade ice cream in a Ziploc bag. Combine (2 tbs) sugar, (1 cup) half and half, and (1/2 tsp) vanilla extract in a pint-size bag and seal it tightly. Then put the (1/2 cup) salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it's done. Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag.
  2. Go fishing. Spend the day on the lake seeing who can catch the biggest fish.
  3. Have a water balloon fight. Use ice cold water and the element of surprise!
  4. Create an obstacle course. Use pool noodles, hoses, ladders, cardboard boxes, tunnels, blankets/sheets, mud pits, cones, other people as obstacles and hurdles.
  5. Volunteer at: animal shelters, hospitals, food banks, retirement homes, nurseries, or churches. Also, gain experience in your career interest through internship.
  6. Watch the sunrise and sunset. Watch with friends as the sky changes color when the sun sets or wake up early to see the sun’s morning splendor.
  7. Camp out in a tent. Backyard camping with friends/family wouldn't be complete without ghost stories, s'mores, and star gazing.
  8. Freeze homemade popsicles. Ingredients could include: yogurt, applesauce, fruit juice, and canned fruit.
  9. Stay up all night. Watch movies, bake, play games, go midnight bowling, or star gaze.
  10. Visit the N.C. Zoo. Learn about the many different species there. Go on a day when there are not a lot of crowds and when it’s not too hot.
  11. Learn a new recipe. Take advantage of fresh and seasonal ingredients to use in your dishes. Some fun summer meals could include fresh fruit pies, sweet summer drinks, or savory barbeque.
