What to do instead of prom

If prom isn’t your ideal way of celebrating the end of another educational year, here are some alternatives that offer just as much (and sometimes even more) fun than you would find at prom.
Go Camping- Putting yourself in the middle of the wilderness with your friends is a great idea if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience. However, you might want to make sure you have a certified scout with you, or someone comfortable with fire safety precautions.

Hike - Strap on a pair of Chaco’s with wool socks and take a breath of spring air whistling between trees and flowers.  Exercise and meditative all in one, great memories, photos and likely more than a few ticks to bring back home with you.

Go to a Concert - Whether it is Tyler the Creator style grandeur you seek or a couple of guys with guitars on a porch, it’s undeniable that music makes life better.  So ditch the humdrum vibe of the prom D.J. and jam out to some killer bands in the great wide world (or the triangle area, depending on curfew).

Go out to dinner - Is there a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try, or a food truck with so many good options you feel bad only buying one?  Well take that $200 meant for prom and spend it divulging in the whims of your taste buds with friends.

Build a blanket/pillow fort - Pillows and blankets were meant to make your dreams come true; this is your chance to make a pillow fort of epic proportions.  Grab some friends and arm yourselves with comforters, couch pillows, sheets, and a few snacks to fuel the work. Admire all your hard work while watching a movie and eating popcorn.

Visit a museum - If parties and loud music are not your idea of a fun time, an evening in a quiet, thoughtful place might be. Museums are interesting, fun, and large enough to spend countless hours in. Whether you are into art, history, natural science, or outer space, there are plenty of museums in Raleigh to satisfy a night of knowledge.

Go to the beach - Why not make your first summer trip down to the beach? Bathing suits and towels are less bulky than prom attire, and a spray tan will not be necessary. Spend the day splashing in the waves, napping on the sand, hitting volleyballs, digging holes, and eating fruit, ice cream, and sandwiches.

Throw yourself a spring festival - Ask friends to bring along a snack to share and enjoy a day in the sun reliving your rapidly waning childhood. Activity ideas include anything likely to be seen at an elementary school field day- balloon toss, laser tag, frisbee, slip and slides, capture the flag, and tug of war.
