Modern spin on classic story "A Christmas Carol"

Sarah Ford
Staff Writer

For the past 40 years, Ira David Wood III and Theatre in the Park have been performing their comic adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Each year, thousands of people pack into theaters in Raleigh and Durham to partake in this incredible experience.
This adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas story is unique in that, while keeping the integrity of the original story, the cast weaves in jokes about modern-day topics, ranging from Tiger Woods to the Affordable Care Act and insurance companies. These gags, along with the close-knit cast, help to create the fun, family-friendly atmosphere that allows the show to be a hit year after year.
Wood has played the infamous Ebenezer Scrooge for 39 of the past 40 years. Three years ago, Wood had heart surgery and had to yield the role to his son, Ira David Wood IV, who now plays the lamplighter.
