Luke Sieber makes an incredible effort.

Apex Men’s Varsity lacrosse fell 8-7 to Cardinal Gibbons in Tuesday’s contest.  The Cougars recorded only their second loss for the season.  Apex currently ranks second in the conference (10-2) and fourth in scoring offense.  Luke Sieber ranks second amongst the top goal scorers in the state with 39 goals.  Sieber wasn’t bothered by the statistic.   “It doesn’t really have an effect on me,” Derek Sweet leads the Cougars and the entire state totaling 32 goals and 43 assists for 75 points.

“Our main issue was not being able to clear the ball,” Sieber said, “If we could have cleared ten percent, better there’s no doubt we would have won.”  The Cougars also fell to the Crusaders on their home field earlier in the season, making their games against Gibbons their only two losses of the season.

Overall, the Cougars are 14-2, Sieber mentioned coming together as a team had a big impact on the success.  “Last year, no one made an effort to bring the team closer,” he said, “now that we have come together as a team, it’s really helped with our success.  Practices have been a lot more serious,” he said.  “There are no days off this year.”

In his freshman year, Sieber made it to the state finals against Myers Park and fell short.  Sieber said a taste of the finals wasn’t good enough.  “It would mean the world to me to win the championship my senior year,” he said.  “I would have no doubt in the way I ended my career.”

As of now, Apex will likely face Leesville in the first round of the playoffs and Gibbons in the third.  “Bringing the intensity is something we’ve done all season, and if we can keep that up and clear the ball better, I think we have a legitimate chance at winning the championship,” he said. The Cougars face Holly Springs in their final home game of the regular season tonight.
