Fifty Apex High art students, along with teachers Ian Sands, Shawnda Rossi and Brenda Brokke, visited Washington, D.C. on April 19. The trip exposed students to some of the works of art that they have studied in their art classes. “It’s exciting when the students get to see the art of the famous artists that they have learned about,” said Sands. The students visited the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The National Gallery of Art has classic artwork and is completely hands off, differing the contemporary and interactive artwork of the Hirshhorn.

Sophomore Meghan Morris enjoyed seeing the art in person. “I loved seeing the art in person and listening to the tour guide talk about the brush strokes and the meaning behind the paintings,” said Morris. Senior Alec Pierzga preferred the modern art displayed at the Hirshhorn. “I loved the Hirshhorn because it was refreshing to go to an art museum where you could actually touch and interact with the art,” said Pierzga. Senior Caroline Crowley preferred the more traditional art displayed in the National Gallery. “I loved the photography exhibition because it shows how photography has progressed over the years,” said Crowley.

Piezerga said, “I had a good time with my friends and teachers. It was the special field trip because it is the best and last field trip I will ever take in high school.”
