Prom 2012 Dress Trends and Locations

With May 5 on the horizon, everyone’s buzzing with the inevitable issues that surround prom, including what kind of dress to wear. Choosing that special dress can be difficult. One should keep in mind body type, color palettes, and personal style when choosing a dress. It also helps to be in the know about the top trends and styles. This year, the most popular of these are prints, glitz, bejeweled dresses, and metallic colors. Sites and stores alike are stocking up on dresses with these features in a variety of styles. One thing to really look for is hemlines that are short in the front and long in the back, creating a dramatic swooping skirt.
Though there are a variety of places to shop, David’s Bridal has one of the largest selections. Their prices start at $30 for a less elaborate dress, with prices rising to as much as $300. You can shop online, or at one of their store locations in Durham, Raleigh, or Fayetteville. Other places with similar selections include PromGirl.net or Henris.com, though both feature a higher price range.

Ian Sands Recognized in Art Magazine

School Arts Magazine featured Sands'
innovative project for students.

Emily Lindesmith
Editor-in-Chief

Art teacher Ian Sands attended the National Art Educator Association conference in New York in Feburary. Last year he published an article in School Arts Magazine showcasing his “sticky note” project. Sands along with the Media Coordinator of Davis Publications, the magazine’s publisher, presented curriculum focused on integrating technology with traditional art lessons.
He met with the School Arts Magazine Editor-in-Chief and the president of Davis Publications and is now working on two additional articles. Sands said, “One is on the masking tape project and one is on digital grading.”
Sands is pioneering a new form of student evaluation – blogging. He has his students create a blog at the beginning of the semester then add more posts throughout each project. Sands prefers this method of grading because he “gets to see the process of the project not just the final product.” He notes that “when you have projects all over the place, it is much easier to go on the blog to grade.” Students receive a combined grade on the blog and the final product.
Sands is incorporating technology into each of his lessons. “There is a separation between traditional art and computer art and I want to merge the two,” he said. He will speak at the conference again next year on the progress of blogging. Sands states, “The future of art is to merge with technology.”

Lip Dub Cast Competes for $10,000

Many can easily recall the moment Apex High received a $5,000 check for placing second in Fox 50’s 2011 Lip Dub competition. This year’s cast and crew seek to achieve similar success with a fresh, unique video.
Senior Rachel Carter and junior Erin Morris are this year’s directors. Both art students plan on using their combined creative skills to produce an interesting final product. “I’m in Art IV right now,” says Carter, “which lets me bring my creative process to set.”
Carter and Morris were crew members last year and helped with set design. Using props made from cardboard, the directors shot outside this year, allowing the video to be easily viewed. “We also want the cast to clearly mouth words,” Morris comments. The video features a song by Holy Ghost Tent Revival, a local Greensboro band.
Lip Dub members are widening the voting base this year. “We’re planning on advertising closer to when voting begins and putting signs around town, not just the school,” explains Carter.
Voting will begin on Monday, April 23 at 12:01 a.m. and last until Sunday, May 6 at 11:59 p.m. Voters must become registered users on Fox50.com, and can vote up to ten times per day.
Although the task of directing puts much pressure on Morris and Carter, the two are up for a challenge. “It would be really great to win and leave Apex knowing I helped my school,” says Carter.
