Sunset on the way to Roatan, Honduras |
The school’s band returned from their cruise to Mexico and Honduras on April 7 with a multitude of awards in tow and memories to last a life time. Some of the highlights from the cruise include the unforgettable beauty of Roatan, Honduras, the entertainment on the boat, and salsa dancing on the last night.
In the Wind Ensemble senior Adam Willits received an award for his clarinet solo along with junior Nick VanBuskirk on the soprano saxophone. The Wind Ensembles flute section was recognized for their skills during “Pineapple Poll” by Sullivan-Mackerras while the low brass section along with senior Jessica Mohr on tenor sax were recognized for their playing technique during Henry Fillmore’s “Rolling Thunder.”
I liked the last cruise director, Dave, better; he was a lot more fun and entertaining. I liked the bigger rooms this time. Overall I think this cruise was better,” says junior Courtney Scott who is part of the Wind Ensemble flute section. “I thought it was a great experience and it was such a wonderful trip to spend with the band,” says Seith.
The bands will perform at both the end of year concert and the pops concert.
The Wind Ensemble flute section consists of: seniors Avia Kinard, Caroline Nichols, and Sirmina Dremsizova, juniors Courtney Scott, Monica Rizk and Kealin Kennedy. The low brass section is comprised of seniors Tyler Rumple, Nick Henson, Eric Luke and Geoff Zieman, along with juniors Sam Voytko, Justin Perkins and Jordan Crowell.
This trip was not just fun and games, but an opportunity for the band to show off their wealth of talent, and that’s exactly what they did. Both the concert band and Wind Ensemble earned ratings of superior from their adjudicator (judge), the highest rating a group can earn.
Along with the two bands earning a rating of superior,
several students were recognized for their individual musicianship. In the lower band, sophomore Kristen Williams and freshman Kirk Peterson and Caitlin Muddiman were recognized for their trio while sophomore Jamie Seith was recognized for her flute solo. “I was really surprised to receive one; but when my name was called, I was thrilled that I was able to represent the band at the cruise festival,” exclaims Seith.
