Democrats sweep Wake County Commissioner elections

Democrats swept the 2014 Wake County Commissioner election, and now hold all seven seats on the Board of Commissioners. Candidates Sig Hutchinson, Matt Calabria, Jessica Holmes, and John Burns all defeated Republican incumbents in their respective elections. The board was formerly controlled by a 4-3 Republican majority which was under fire for its handling of issues with public transit, and its lack of cooperation with the Democrat-led School Board. Criticism even came from within the county’s Republican Party itself, with many conservative mayors of Wake County towns voting Democrat in the election.

With their unanimous control of the Board, Democrats look to increase spending in schools and infrastructure to coincide with the area’s rapid growth.
