Head Coach Joe Kilby and the Apex Cougar varsity football team lost their first home game  against a tough Lee County team posting a 38-7 loss.  “Our kids fought hard, battled hard, we know how to do that. We learned that last week [against Durham Riverside]. Mainly, we need to clean up our execution,” said Kilby in a post-game interview.

The game started out with a Lee County touchdown at the 9:30 minute mark. Apex responded less than a minute later with a 79-yard touchdown throw from junior Jordan Betts to senior Gavin Locklear, but then Lee County took control of the scoreboard, ultimately putting up 31 more points.

“First quarter they punched one in on us, then we punched one in on them and it was a ballgame. But, then we made some pretty critical mistakes [Apex had three interceptions, and one fumble], and spotted them a couple touchdowns and it didn’t go well from there,” said Kilby.
The leading tacklers for Apex were Austin Burke and Jason Lockamy with 7 each. The leading receiver was Gavin Locklear with 79 receiving yards. Locklear went 9 for 29 for carries. Apex’s record is now 1-1.
