New Teacher: Jessica Soares

College: University of North Carolina at Wilmington

Classes: Fundamentals and Foundations of Math (Common Core 1)

Inspiration: As a 2005 Apex High School graduate, she “always admired” Mr. Leary because, “he could make it [math] understandable quickly.”

Past Teaching Experience: Soares taught Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Math I for five years at South Johnston High School.

Best High School Memory: Graduating was because it was “all about us” and “you were recognized”.

Most Embarrassing High School Memory: Getting hit with a badminton racquet in gym class because “everyone saw it” and she was “bruised.”

Family: She has a younger brother, who graduated from Apex in 2009, and a younger sister, who graduated from Apex in 2012. Her sister now attends East Carolina University.

Favorite Restaurants: La Cocina and Daniel’s.

Best Thing to do on a Rainy Day: Sleep and clean because you “don’t ever want to do them when it’s sunny”.

Favorite TV Shows: Friends, Scandal, Revenge, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Would love to:  Travel the world because she has never left the east coast. Specifically Germany, Australia, and the Caribbean.

SPARKcon, the art fueled volunteer driven festival starts today in downtown Raleigh, and will end late September 14. SPARKcon is a free and fun venue that turns Fayetteville Street into an electric mass of creativity.  Check out your fellow art students who will be there Friday and Saturday participating in the chalk drawings that fill the street. New Teacher: Andrew Coffey

Mr. Andrew Coffey

Subject: English II Honors

Colleges: Coffey attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for a bachelor's in history, transferred to Appalachian State University for English, then back to Carolina to finish his English degree.

Past Teaching Experience: A student teacher in Carrboro County, then spent a few years teaching at East Chapel Hill High School.

Inspiration: “Really great history teachers in high school.”  Yes, he is an English teacher.  He has several history teachers who he found impressive. “I liked how they would admit when they didn’t know stuff.”

Best High School Memory: “Graduating!”

Most Embarrassing High School Memory: “The way I behaved,” he admits “It was all about my own little world.” 

Hobbies: Hiking, camping, backpacking, cooking, and tabletop roleplaying games to name a few.  However “Reading is number one.”

Favorite food: “Sandwiches are so versatile!  A burger is a sandwich, tacos are a kind of sandwich,” he explains. “Like an abstract sandwich.”

The Beard Bonus: The thick beard Coffey sports has not always been in his life.  “My best friend had a beard, and I was twenty two or twenty three with no beard.”  But since 2009, Coffey has been cultivating his jaw warmer and plans to keep it, for practical reasons of course.  “It’s much easier than shaving.”

There are a lot of unknowns for incoming freshmen, including a new school, new people, and a newfound sense of freedom. Thankfully, there are plenty of people around who know what it is like to be in those shoes. Apex’s upperclassmen were willing to help, and volunteered all sorts of advice for the Class of 2018.

Early applications are a chance for rising college freshmen to show a proactive interest in universities they want to attend. As a result of applying early, a student would receive the results faster, get noticed by the universities earlier, and would have a better chance of getting accepted.

Apex XC defends their title

The Apex Men’s Cross Country team won the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. on Saturday, September 6, by a score of 62-98 over West Johnston. It was their second straight year taking home this championship.
