Students were blown away
by the effort put forth at this year’s prom. The “Polynesian paradise” took
place at the Embassy Suites in Cary on Saturday night.
“My favorite part of
prom was by far the people and the scenery. Those things combined really made
the night feel alive,” said senior Jake Wnuk. The prom committee went as far as
to bring a van into the venue and placed pineapples on every table, which attendees
enjoyed taking home after prom.
The night started out
with hula girl performances. Although these went on for longer than expected,
it gathered everyone around the floor and eventually helped get the prom past
the awkward stage of an empty dance floor. Some students expressed their
frustration with how long the dancers went on. Senior Jess Wight said, “The
hula dancing girls made everyone get off the dance floor and it was annoying.
All I wanted to do was have everybody watch me whip and watch me nae nae.”
Senior Olivia Bartol
expressed her appreciation for the food, “My favorite part was the cheese cubes
and crackers.” Junior Kristen Maselli was upset with the placement, saying
“They should've made it more obvious they had food. I was so hungry.”
Attendees enjoyed
unlimited Pelicans and the line never got too long throughout the
night. “The pelly was swelly in my belly,” said senior and Pelican’s fanatic
John Kitko.
Homecoming princess,
Breielle Sheller, ended up also winning prom queen. Her king turned out to be
Mr. Apex, Zafir Alam. “It was like I was a king in a Polynesian paradise,” said
Alam on his victory.
Sheller described her
winning as, “pretty surprising and surreal, but also really exciting.” The two
shared their dance to Ed Sheeran’s Thinking out Loud. “It was kind of
awkward making up a dance on the spot with Zafir, but it was a really fun and
memorable experience,” she said.
As prom came to a close,
students walked out with their party favors that went along with the Hawaiian
vibes. These included sunglasses and tye-dye koozies that were labeled “Apex
High Prom 2015.”
Overall, the prom
committee did an extraordinary job. The theme was prevalent and almost all who
attended said they had a great time dancing with friends.
