Apex High’s student body will witness a tribute to Jimmy Valvano on Friday, November 8. According to Jim Rowe, the Apex High band director, the Jimmy Valvano tribute has been taking place all band season, starting from the first football game. From the first football game forward, all band competitions have been dedicated to the late N.C. State head basketball coach.
Steven
Kelly, the music arranger for the Apex High Marching Band, came up with the
idea. The tribute is inspired by Jimmy
Valvano’s legacy, but specifically his 1993 ESPY speech, which has over two
million views on Youtube. Rowe and Kelly
contacted the Valvano family during the summer to get their approval to use the
Jimmy Valvano logo on the Apex High 2013 Marching Band shirt.
The
music line up for the tribute will start with 2000 AD Reaching For the Stars by Michael Kamen, Slava! by Leonard Bernstein, the N.C.
State fight song, Fix You by Coldplay,
and the tribute will end with Slalom
by Carter Pann.
The
Valvano Family has been invited to attend Friday’s tribute, which will occur
during halftime.
