Star Trek Into Darkness is currently dominating the box office taking the number one spot opening weekend May 18. This intense, sci-fi film is not only for Star Trek fans, known Trekkies, but for anyone who enjoys a humorous and action-packed movie who haven’t seen the pervious films. Director J.J. Abrams rose above and beyond the bar that he set in Star Trek (2009).
Into Darkness follows the story of Captain James T., Kirk (Chris Pine) of The Enterprise and it’s crew. When Star Fleet is attacked by one man, the Enterprise goes on a manhunt for John Harrison or Kahn (Benedict Cumberbatch). The search causes them to go out beyond The Federation’s borders to Kronos. Along the way secrets are exposed, emotions are toyed with, and twists are developed at every corner.

Chris Pine returns as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek franchise. Pine depicts Kirk with the same arrogance and leadership as before, but with more emotion and sarcasm, which makes his character come to life. Kirk’s best friend and first officer, Spock, is played again by Zachary Quinto. Quinto portrays both the logical, Vulcan side of Spock and the open, emotional, and human side of him. In this sequel, fans see a side of Spock that they’ve never seen before.

Acclaimed British actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, plays Khan, the dark and cunning antagonist. Cumberbatch shows the perfect amount of instability in Khan’s mind that causes him to bend, nearly to breaking point. Having to beef up for the role, Cumberbatch has many fight scenes that intensifies this film to a whole different level.

Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Bones (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood), and the rest of the Enterprise crew return, adding the sense of family on the Enterprise, and the hilarious interactions with the main characters. The music and special effects that bring the whole film together are out of this world, literally. This is definitely a movie Trekkies, sci-fi fans, and average movie goers should see in theaters.
