The Apex High School women’s varsity volleyball team went into the conference season with high hopes of finishing with a perfect record. The team lost their final conference match against Holly Springs High School finishing with a 13-1 conference record. The team is still conference champions for the 2013-2014 season however, and Coach Emily Regan said the team, “Definitely showed the conference what we are made of.”

Now the team must shift their focus to the upcoming playoffs. The AHS varsity volleyball team went into the playoffs with a 16-3 record overall, and a maxpreps.com ranking of third in the state.  The team is now 17-3 after winning their first playoff match against Knightdale High School Saturday, October 19. Regan expects the team to do well in the playoffs, saying, “[They] definitely have [the] potential to beat anybody.” She hopes to get farther in the playoffs than last year (Apex made it to the third round) and to make an appearance at states.

Some of the key players that have played throughout all matches this year are Coral Kazaroff and captains Ally Beckman and Brianna Belicic. When it comes to the team dynamic, Regan feels, “Apex has always had a good chemistry and [the players] get along well outside the court.”Regan’s goal for next year is to have an undefeated conference season.

The next playoff match is against Wakefield High School on Tuesday October 22. Regan believes Wakefield possesses the largest threat to the Apex volleyball team because Apex has not played Wakefield yet this year.
