The
Cougars (2-4) notched a road win against the Fuquay-Varina Bengals (3-3) last
night by a score of 31-21, snapping their four game losing streak.
The
Apex defense once again played exceptionally well, holding the Bengals to just
266 total yards compared to their season average of 345. The Cougar defense
also managed to force three fumbles, recovering two of them, and to intercept a
pass to seal the win. “The defense decided to step up and play,” said head
coach Joe Kilby. “You get tossed around for a couple games and then come back
and take it out on your opponent.”
The
win was the first for the Cougars since their August 23 home win against
Harnett Central. “It was very big for confidence,” said Kilby about the win. “We
won all phases of the game, and looking forward, it will give us a chance to
make the playoffs.”
On
October 11, Apex take on Athens Drive in this year’s homecoming game. The
Jaguars will come into the game with a record of 3-4 following a 48-12 home
loss to Holly Springs. “Athens Drive is a tough team,” said Kilby. “It should
make for a physical grudge match.”
