Upcoming albums: sharp or flat?

With all of the technology available in the present age, it is easier than ever to become a musician. However, it can often be hard to keep up with the latest music trends. Fortunately, the media provides many useful outlets to discover great new music.

Lil Wayne
New Orleans-based rapper Lil Wayne will be releasing his 10th studio LP (Limited Play) I Am Not a Human Being II on March 26 of this year. Fans of Lil Wayne’s rap collective YMCMB, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, or any other pop rap artists will love this record. Lil Wayne will be displaying his trademark: a repetitive, slurred rapping style over sampled electronic beats. Unfortunately, rap fans looking for something more mentally stimulating may want to pass on this one. Lil Wayne has never been one to deliver much in the lyrics department.

The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips have recently announced the release date of their first album in four years, The Terror, to be April 2, 2013. The psychedelic rock quintet is best known for their tenth album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, released in 2002 and have since been releasing albums consistently every four years. This album will be popular among fans of The Apples in Stereo, MGMT, Neon Indian, and Tame Impala. Be sure to keep this album on your radar.

Justin Bieber

Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber unleashed his raw, stripped down, acoustic pop album Believe Acoustic January 29 of this year. The new release is an acoustic version of his previous platinum-selling album, Believe. This should be a real crowd pleaser for fans of auto-tune drenched pop radio, Cody Simpson, and One Direction. Bieber has received much praise for his single “Baby” which became the most watched YouTube video of all time, surpassed only by Psy’s “Gangnam Style.”

Foxygen

Foxygen dropped their second LP We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic this month, making it their first release in seven months. The duo’s eclectic blend of folk, punk, and psychedelic rock draws 60s-styled influences from bands like The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. We Are the21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic displays a cleaner production style and more structured songwriting and is currently the subject of much critical acclaim.
