Male Fashion: Not an Oxymoron

Clothing styles and trends have changed over the years and tend to define each generation.  The 70s was the disco era, in the 80s people rocked mullets, perms, leather, and aviators.  As the 90s invaded, flannel shirts, wool sweaters, jean shorts (jorts), and a modern preppy style, which we still see today, dominated the decade.

Polo Ralph Lauren has been around for ages and is gaining popularity along with other brands which fit the preppy-esque style like Vineyard Vines.   Both specialize in collared shirts in long sleeve, short sleeve, and button down styles.  Vineyard Vines gives more of a beach feel while Polo embodies a classy, higher-end feel.

Another new era has evolved with “street clothing” which is typically worn by skateboarders, Hip Hop artists, NBA and NFL athletes, which include companies such as Diamond Supply Co. and LRG.  These brands consist of graphic t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and tank shirts.

What do all these brands have in common?  They are all popular among a youth generation, so everyone seems to be wearing the same thing.  It’s hard to say that guys are willing to change up their attire just to be a little different from others.
People are seen wearing exactly the same shoes, exactly the same color, exactly the same shirt with exactly the same bottoms.  What happened to a little individuality?  Now, it’s one thing to go out, completely mismatch an outfit and look totally atrocious, but it appears that people lack creativity and the will to be themselves.  This lack of creativity has been lost because people are too worried about being judged.

Do we want to see clones of people?  People are too afraid to experiment.  Maybe try different brands that may not be popular, but along the same lines as the mainstream clothing line.  Who knows, you could be a pioneer.

One such pioneer, Hip Hop artist ASAP Rocky, has taken high end fashion to the next level.  Although he occasionally sports Air Jordan’s shoes, which range from about $200-$400, you can usually find him wearing Raf Simons and Rick Owens clothing as he states in his single Peso.  Now you may not be able to afford $415 button down collared shirts, or $895 pants, but maybe take this as a challenge to find clothes that may look similar and apply to his fashion sense.

You can find similar styles to ASAP Rocky on sites like Svpply.com, JackThreads.com, and Asos.com for a much more reasonable price than actual Raf Simons and Rick Owens gear from straight off the runway.  Don’t eliminate major clothing lines, but spice up your wardrobe a little bit and add some variety.   Shops like Marshalls and TJ Maxx are stores where you have no idea what you might find, but may come across brands like polo, chaps, where you can get really good deals.  If you’re really feeling like rocking some Raf Simons or Rick Owens and you don’t want to pay full price, Ebay is always a safe bet.  Even check out a local thrift store to see what they might have.
