Theatre students at Apex High School are preparing for another spring production with passion and excitement. “Into the Woods” opens on Thursday, March 1, and the other performances take place on March 2-3 and 8-10, all at 7:00 p.m. A cast of 28 is currently working hard to bring together this musical, rehearsing Monday through Friday from January until opening night.
“Into the Woods” is a musical with a score by
Stephen Sondheim and book written by James Lapine. The play intertwines and
follows the plots of several fairy tales and pursues them further to explore
the consequences of the characters’ wishes and journeys. The main characters
are taken from the stories of “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the
Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” and “Cinderella,” tied together by an original story
involving a baker, his wife and their quest to begin a family. The musical has
won several Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Book.
Senior Rob Rankin will play the baker, senior Nicole
Barone will play the baker’s wife, junior Bethany Dycus will play Cinderella,
senior Caroline Miller will play the witch and junior Allison Collins takes on
the part of Little Red Riding Hood.
“It’s hard work and it takes up a lot of time, but
everyone here has a love for theatre that just makes it all worth it. The
energy in the auditorium is always uplifting,” Collins said, “There’s a special
kind of bond between us all, we’re like a team.” Apex has an extraordinary
amount of talent, and these actors are sure to impress when all of the
rehearsals are finished and the stage lights up on March 1. “You meet some of
the most amazing people ever while getting to act, sing and dance! It is a
great way to end my day with the people that make me smile. You also get to
wear beautiful costumes, and put on amazing shows that will stay in your
memories forever,” said Rachel Redwine.
