Seniors Katie Godfrey, Megan Gravley and Sydney Snedeker raised $30,000 at the Peak City Gala of Hope, a charitable event to fundraise for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Principal Matt Wight announced on the first day of the new semester that the day of the Gala, January 22, was one of his proudest moments at Apex High School.
The gala was inspired by each of the students close connection to the devastating
effects of cancer. Godfrey’s grandmother died after a sudden diagnosis of
pancreatic cancer. A close friend of Snedeker’s passed away recently after a
long battle with cancer. She notes the hardship of watching cancer destroy
loved ones, “He was so sporty and athletic, and then you see him in a wheelchair
and unable to take care of himself, and it’s a really shocking situation.”
Gravley’s grandfather passed away and her mother is currently in remission with
breast cancer. “This project isn’t just a project. It’s a whole lot more to
us,” Gravley states.
Being young, the girls had difficulty finding organizations to take them seriously. “We definitely have had a lot of doors shut in our face,” Godfrey said. After the creation of a website, brochures, and a promotional video they have found donations for location, catering, and speakers. Snedeker adds, “The number of people who supported us outweighed those who didn’t believe in us.” The students have secured 16 sponsors, multiple restaurants to donate food, planned the location and donations, and gathered items of auction.
With the support of Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski and N.C. State Athletic Director Debbie Yow the gala was held on January 22 at 7p.m. at the Peak United Methodist Church. “Our work with cancer research isn’t done yet,” Snedeker states.
