Junior Jason Lockamy was one of ten students from the Southeast who received the Community Captain award for his excellence in football, school, and his community and was recognized by the Carolina Panthers on December 23, 2012. The qualifications of the award are to have a 3.0 GPA or higher, to play football, be active in your community, and be recommended by a coach.

Lockamy was nominated by former offensive lineman Coach Isaac Bristol. “[Jason is] a very intelligent young man, as well as [an intelligent] player, which is every [coach’s] dream. You don’t have to worry about Jason and his grades; you don’t have to worry about him getting in trouble…he’s just one of those kids you never have to worry about,” said Bristol.

Lockamy is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. He is the State Director and was nominated as Student Ambassador of the Year for Shoes for Liberia in 2012.

Shoes for Liberia is an organization to collect shoes as, which will later be shipped to Liberia. Lockamy set donation bins in his locker room, in various shops throughout Apex, and went door to door. “They [the Liberians] contract foot diseases [because they are bereft of shoes] which makes them die,” said Lockamy. When explaining his initial intent for participating, Lockamy explained, “My mother is from Liberia, and though I may not be from there, I can still give back.”

As a result of winning the award, Lockamy had the opportunity to attend the Carolina Panthers vs. Oakland Raiders game. “It was [an] awesome [experience]. Being down there on the field, seeing all the players and then being in that game time atmosphere was just amazing,” said Lockamy.

Lockamy is currently a defensive end on the Apex High School football team. He has been playing since seventh grade, and hopes to play at either Georgia, Vanderbilt, or The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
