As the new year approaches, many people make a resolution to change poor habits. Although sticking to a resolution may seem like a daunting task, the following tips will help you successfully fulfill plans for the new year.
1. Set achievable goals
Instead of setting unattainable goals like a rigid weight loss number or vowing to eat only healthy foods every day, try to simply exercise sometime each week, or make a conscious effort to occasionally cook more nutritious meals. This way, you’ll avoid being discouraged while still improving your health.
2. Limit to one resolution
It’s easy to get slightly carried away when thinking of ways to improve in the upcoming year. As opposed to exercising more, eating healthier, and taking up a new hobby, try to pick just one resolution, or tackle each a little bit at a time. Changing multiple aspects of your life at the same time can be overwhelming and may simply stress you out.
3. Pick something that motivates you
When choosing a resolution, don’t pick something that you think is simply good for you. You’re more likely to meet goals if the resolution is an activity you are interested in. If you want to exercise more, but hate going to the gym, try biking or organize a sports game with friends. You’ll be having fun while also getting into shape.
4. Outline a realistic plan
Be sure to schedule time out of your day to fulfill your resolution. Whether it be reading more or taking a walk, try to block out a half hour or so daily to meet your goals. You don’t have to set aside multiple hours a day in order to meet your goals.
5. Start off easy
Take each step at a time. Change is difficult, so don’t expect perfection.
6. Stay positive
Making any lifestyle change can seem overwhelming, but don’t allow yourself to become discouraged. Once you fall into a routine, such as exercising each day, you’ll improve your quality of life. Don’t let a few road bumps get you down!
7. Share your goals with friends and family
Family and friends are your main support system. They can motivate, encourage, and help you remain on a path of success.
