Previous Jobs: After 20 years of serving, Nelson retired from the Marines in 1988 and went to work for Golden Corral as a manager for 18 months. He was then hired at Zebulon Middle School as a teacher and worked there for about seven years. He worked in a self-contained classroom, and specialized in teaching children with learning and behavior disabilities. After Zebulon, he took an assignment at Millbrook High School as a teacher. After nine years at Millbrook, he was hired at Longview where he became the Assistant Principal from 2010-2012.
Motivation for becoming a teacher: Nelson was encouraged to work with children when he served in the military. After spending a year in Vietnam, Nelson knew he wanted to help young people grow and learn.
