Last month, Apex High School welcomed a class of students visiting from China to get a glimpse of life in America.

The students came from the Chinese capital of Beijing, and noticed the change from the big city to small town right away. “I like the environment; there is a lot less pollution,” said John, one of the students. The students also experienced a very different atmosphere in the school day itself, especially in terms of daily schedule and routines. “In China we have one classroom instead of switching classes every period,” said Vivian Zhou, another Chinese student. In Chinese schools, teachers move into different classrooms rather than students as in America.

Apex students and faculty who hosted the visitors also enjoyed the experience. “We watched TV a lot. His favorite show was The Big Bang Theory,” said junior Jody Miller. “He also came to Spanish with me and was very confused by it.”

When speaking about their home city of Beijing, students almost unanimously complimented the local food. “Dumplings are my favorite, and the best place to eat is Wang Fujing,” said Zhou.

During their stay, the Chinese students also went to shop at Cary Towne Center Mall. “When we went to the mall, the kids had a blast,” said media center department chair Leila Moog, the coordinator of the visit. “Several of them bought iPads and tablets and some bought the brand new game consoles.”

The Chinese students thoroughly enjoyed their stay and were very complimentary of Apex. “Apex is really nice,” said Vivian, “and the students are very kind.”
