The TIME: 100 Most Influential People of 2014 issue was released Thursday, April 24 with singer BeyoncĂ© on the issue’s U.S. cover.  Robert Redford, Jason Collins, and Mary Barra were on the issue’s international covers.  TIME chose to divide the honorees into the following five categories: the Titans, the Pioneers, the Artists, the Leaders, and the Icons.  The list held a record 41 women, including singer Miley Cyrus, honored in the Artists category, and 16 year old Malala Yousafzai, who was honored in the Icon category.  Other recognizable names on the big list include Hillary Clinton (who has now made the list eight times), honored in the Titans category, NBA star Jason Collins, honored as a Pioneer, and President Barack Obama (who has now made the list nine times) who was honored in the Leaders category.
Famous colleagues inspired by the winners found themselves writing to honor the honorees, including Justin Timberlake, who wrote about singer and rapper Pharrell Williams, NBA star Dwayne Wade wrote to honor tennis champion Serena Williams, and “The Butler” actor Forest Whitaker who wrote about Ugandan humanitarian Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe.  Other notable names on the list include Pope Francis, Late Night host Seth Myers, Scandal star Kerry Washington, and Sundance Music Festival founder Robert Redford.  The gala celebrating the honorees and their placement on the big list was held last Tuesday, April 29 in the Big Apple.
