Clay Aiken, openly gay former American Idol star, is running for Congress in this upcoming election. He will be facing Renee Ellmers, who won the last election with a 56% - 41% majority. Aiken has experience working with politicians. “I’m a Democrat but when I was appointed by President Bush to serve on a special presidential commission to address the educational challenges with children with special needs, I happily served,” stated Aiken. He believes that both parties have to work together to help move our country forward. “Our problems won’t be solved by one party or another,” he says.

Aiken is a Raleigh native who believes that he will be able to represent the people of North Carolina even if they did not vote for him. Aiken has established his campaign website and posted a short video explaining his reasons for running. "I'm not a politician — I don't ever want to be one — but I do want to help bring back, at least to my corner of North Carolina, the idea that someone can go to Washington to represent all the people whether they voted for you or not," Aiken said in the video. Aiken also believes that our state can become an influential presence in Congress. "And maybe we can play a small part in igniting that change across the rest of our country," he states in his video.

According to an MSNBC poll, Clay Aiken has a 53% chance of taking this election, and he won’t allow Washington to change him. According to the News and Observer, Aiken stated, “I went to Hollywood and it did not change me and I’ll go to Washington and I won’t let it change me.”
