It has been an exciting beginning of the year for Apex senior Katelynn Whitehead and many other art students and teachers as the first meeting of the Apex National Art Honor Society approaches. Whitehead, who is Co-President of the National Art Honor Society, explains the origins of the NAHS saying, “When Ms. Rossi became a part of the art program here last year, she brought the NAHS idea with her. It was formed to help the Apex art community grow.”

The NAHS is intended to be an outlet for anyone to express their creativity, while simultaneously doing good for the community. “We want to have NAHS be a community where you can feel safe with your art,” said Whitehead, adding, “We’re going to volunteer, touch up different pieces of art, do community work, and we’ll have some workshops set up.”

It isn’t hard to get into the National Art Honor Society, says Whitehead, “Anybody who has taken an art class is welcome and any art level is welcome. However, you have to at least have received an A or a B in one art class and you must be dedicated to art.”

You can take part in the first meeting Wednesday, September 18 in room 511; future meetings will be held every second Wednesday of the month in the same room. “The first couple of meetings will be informational, like how to keep connected with NAHS. We’ll have speakers come in and talk about what it’s like to live as an artist,” Whitehead explains.

To all students considering joining the club, Whitehead says, “Make sure you’re committed to art. You should come ready to meet new people, learn new things about art and, most importantly, to grow.”
