So far this football season, there
have been many ups and downs. Two games into the season, Apex High School has
come away with one big win and one big loss. The big win came on August 23 in
the first game of the season with the Cougars (1-1) hosting Harnett Central
(1-1), with Apex winning 43-0. Senior running back Rondell James rushed for
over 200 yards and sophomore running back Isaiah Totten ran for three
touchdowns. “It was thrilling,” said junior offensive lineman Marc Harris. “It
was nice to be on top.”
The next week, the Cougars traveled
to Leesville Road (2-0) to play one of the top teams in the state led by senior
quarterback Braxton Berrios. Leesville won 40-6 in what Apex head coach Joe
Kilby calls a learning experience. “Week two was an eye-opener,” he says, “but
there are a lot of positives. The guys have shown good attitude and work ethic
and they like each other which is important.”
Kilby says that overall, the goal of
this season is, “To be a better team and play physical football. We’re focused
on winning and getting to the playoffs this year to get closer to the state championship.”
Apex travels to Sanderson (0-2) on
Friday, September 6. Despite coming off a loss, Kilby described the team as,
“Focused. They have good focus on where they want to go and have put the time
in.”
