The Model United Nations Club at Apex High School attended the 31st annual Duke University Model United Nations Conference (DUMUNC), from February 16-19.
“Model U.N. is a club where we simulate the United Nations and address global issues, in order to develop an awareness and knowledge of international affairs and learn about the workings of the U.N.,” said senior Matt Lee, president of the Model U.N. at Apex.
At the conference, sixteen Apex students participated in different simulations called committees, with each committee dealing with a different world issue. “I was part of the United Nations Development Programme,” said senior Declan Cleary. “Some delegates [also] served on the League of Arab Nations Council, the International Atomic Energy Council and our president was part of the Futuristic Security Council.”
Students were split into teams of two with assigned countries. They would then debate on three topics on the agenda. Their goal was to develop resolutions to solve problems related to their committee, and to steer the resolution’s outcome to best represent their country’s interests.
“The purpose of the conference, like the club itself, was to become more educated on diplomacy and international relations,” said senior Jason Li.
The Model U.N., sponsored by Adam White, is new at Apex this year. “I first joined Model U.N. in eighth grade to try out a new interest I hadn’t looked into before. I started the club at Apex this year, and I currently serve as president,” said Matt Lee.
“I like Model U.N. because it requires a combination of debate and diplomacy skills to succeed and helps me develop those skills,” Lee added, “It also keeps me informed about international affairs. I would wholeheartedly recommend Model U.N. to any students interested in international relations or considering a Foreign Service career. In addition, anyone who simply wants to learn more about the U.N. and current global issues should definitely check it out.”
