UNC Men's Lacrosse claim eighth ACC Championship

Matt Krombach
Sports Editor

At Keenan Memorial Stadium on a dreary, rainy day in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels competed against the Virginia Cavaliers in what was the Heels’ first Conference Championship since 1996.

After an intense battle on Friday against the Duke Blue Devils, the Tar Heels showed they still had enough gas in the tank.  Within the first five minutes of the first quarter the game was tied 3-3 at 9:59 averaging a goal per minute.  It seemed to be a carbon copy game as the game changed hands back and forth until Carolina fell to a 5-3 Virginia lead in the first quarter but put together a 6-2 run that allowed them to secure a 10-7 lead at the end of the half.

Prom: the pros and cons

Casey Nash & John Santos
Staff Writer and News Editor
PROS (Nash):
Prom is THE night to remember. Whenever thinking back on high school, many remember their prom; it’s a rite of passage in a teenager’s life.

Dressing Up:
Everyone wants to look like a prince or princess, to get out of everyday clothes and to dress to the nines.

Friends:
You get to spend an entire night with all of your friends. You get to dance and have a ball, out of the ordinary “hang out” like simple movie nights or going to dinner and in a completely new element. You get to do something extravagant rather than your everyday run of the mill activities.

Dancing:
Prom is all about the dancing. It doesn’t matter if you can barely keep time or if you are a professional break dancer, you can still get out on the dance floor and enjoy everything prom has to offer.

Fifty Apex High art students, along with teachers Ian Sands, Shawnda Rossi and Brenda Brokke, visited Washington, D.C. on April 19. The trip exposed students to some of the works of art that they have studied in their art classes. “It’s exciting when the students get to see the art of the famous artists that they have learned about,” said Sands. The students visited the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The National Gallery of Art has classic artwork and is completely hands off, differing the contemporary and interactive artwork of the Hirshhorn.

Men's lacrosse thirst for state championship

Luke Sieber makes an incredible effort.

Apex Men’s Varsity lacrosse fell 8-7 to Cardinal Gibbons in Tuesday’s contest.  The Cougars recorded only their second loss for the season.  Apex currently ranks second in the conference (10-2) and fourth in scoring offense.  Luke Sieber ranks second amongst the top goal scorers in the state with 39 goals.  Sieber wasn’t bothered by the statistic.   “It doesn’t really have an effect on me,” Derek Sweet leads the Cougars and the entire state totaling 32 goals and 43 assists for 75 points.

Media ignores Gosnell case

Rebekah Gould
Staff Writer

Time magazine claimed the Casey Anthony trial as, “the social media trial of the century”. You couldn’t turn on the news, pick up a newspaper, or magazine without seeing her picture or reading an article about the case. Anthony was accused of abusing and killing her own daughter, but after nearly a two month trial the jury found her not guilty.

If the nation was so engaged in a case that involved one murder, then wouldn’t they be even more so in such a controversial case involving abortion and eight murder charges?

Senate fails to pass background checks

Sarah Muzzillo
Editor-in-Chief

Gun control has, in recent months, become a hot-button issue. Ever since the devastating Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which left 20 students and seven staff members dead, many views have been debated on how to reduce gun violence. An assault weapons ban, armed guards or teachers in schools, and an expanded background check are just a few proposed ideas. As the first effort to pass gun legislation since Sandy Hook, the United States Senate voted last Wednesday on a bipartisan bill crafted by Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) which would expand the current background check system to include weapons bought online and at gun shows.

Voter IDs: fradulent error

Matt Krombach

Voter IDs have become a topic of conversation due to recent voter fraud and it’s come to the point that IDs are more necessary than ever.  In the past, deceased people have voted, and some citizens have voted more than once.  How does that happen?  If voters were required to present an ID, voter fraud would no longer be an issue.

High school nostalgia

Matt Wotus
Features Editor

From Left to Right: Nahiyan, Lange, Madrid, Mehta, and
myself at the Louvre.
Fourth quarter seniors – the words all high school students can’t wait to hear. Forty-five days of high school left. Graduation is rapidly approaching. “Senioritis” is in full swing, and college is right around the corner. By this time, most seniors can’t wait to get out of high school. I was the same way. I couldn’t wait to leave this place, to get away from almost everyone, and to move on. I have countdown apps on my phone showing me how many days there are until graduation (58), as well as move-in day at UNC (123). However, my trip to France over spring break with 13 other Apex students made me pause for a moment. Even though I’m reluctant to admit it now, I will miss aspects of high school. Yes, really.

As kids, we complain a lot. We can’t wait to grow. We’re tired of being kids and being on a leash by either our parents or teachers, and we want to be free. Now that I am only two months away from graduation, let me tell you something: I wish I could be a kid again.

NC Legislator proposes crooked bill

Nicholas Chupka stands before a bare brick wall
Nicholas Chupka
Staff Writer

It has only been a few months since the election of Republican Governor Pat McCrory, signaling the GOP’s rise to power in the North Carolina government and bringing with it two bills that could quite possibly make the Tar Heel State the laughing stock of the nation.

The recent North Carolina GOP written Defense of Religion Act was created with the intention to implement an official “state religion” and sparked much anger and outrage all across the Internet. The bill declared that the federal government cannot prevent a state from “making laws respecting an establishment of religion,” and that the First Amendment of the Constitution only applies to the federal government. All right, I guess freedom of speech applies only to the federal government and that the states can mandate what its citizens can and cannot say.

Students tour Paris in springtime

Matt Wotus
Features Editor

The group in Pontoise.
While many students flock to Florida or local beaches for spring break, 14 Apex High students, including Legacy’s own Matt Wotus and John Santos, had a unique opportunity. They completed an exchange program with Saint Martin de France, a private school in Pontoise, France, located 35 miles north of Paris. Students from Saint Martin came to Apex in early March. The Apex students had an opportunity to live with a host family and see the sites that make Paris the famous city it is today. “It [the trip] was a great experience and a lot of fun,” sophomore Nicholas Madrid said. Sophomore Alex Lange agreed. “It was an extravagant vacation,” he said.

Since the school was not in session on Monday, April 1, for Easter Monday, students spent the three day weekend with their host families. For Easter, Madrid said his family took him to a Chinese restaurant. “Walking in, it didn’t look like a Chinese restaurant,” Madrid said. “It wasn’t really that good to be honest. I prefer the ones over here,” he added. Sophomore Trevor Mehta said his family took him Easter egg hunting in their backyard, a tradition in the United States as well. “I was hopping like a bunny when I found out [we were going Easter egg hunting],” he added.

Sunset on the way to Roatan, Honduras
The school’s band returned from their cruise to Mexico and Honduras on April 7 with a multitude of awards in tow and memories to last a life time. Some of the highlights from the cruise include the unforgettable beauty of Roatan, Honduras, the entertainment on the boat, and salsa dancing on the last night.

This trip was not just fun and games, but an opportunity for the band to show off their wealth of talent, and that’s exactly what they did. Both the concert band and Wind Ensemble earned ratings of superior from their adjudicator (judge), the highest rating a group can earn.

Make Facebook your new Home

Zane Muzzillo
Staff Writer

Facebook Home is new Android software that turns your cell phone into a Facebook phone. This product is a type of application called a launcher. A launcher allows users to modify their home screen, launch applications, and perform tasks outside of an application.

So, how does it work? When you use Facebook Home your lock screen changes from a number pad or drawn pattern to a screen with constantly updating Facebook statuses. Your profile picture resides on the lock screen and is called the bobble. The bobble allows you to access your apps, message people, and go back to your last used application. Facebook messenger has received a major upgrade; it can now also send text messages as opposed to only Facebook messages. When you receive a message, the picture of the person who sent it, which is called a chat head, will appear at the right hand side of your screen.

Facebook worked with HTC, a phone manufacturer, on the HTC First which will be the first phone to have this software. Facebook did not work much on the hardware. “We focused primarily on the software and that’s what we build here at Facebook,” said Joey Flynn, Facebook software engineer. The HTC First launched Friday, April 12, 2013 on AT&T for $100, and you can download Facebook Home for free on the Google Play Store.

Hobbies peak at Apex

Amanda Nash and Zane Muzzillo
A&E Editor and Staff Writer

Many people have generic hobbies like sports, art, or music. However, others choose to follow the path less traveled and pursue less conventional dreams. The following Apex students have uncommon interests:

Name: Gabe DeCaro, senior

Hobby: James Bond impersonating

Gabe DeCaro, valedictorian of the class of 2013, carries a deep secret. He impersonates Agent 007 on the side (outside of school, that is). “I was born to be Bond. All you need is a suit, a pistol, and an imagination,” he said. DeCaro often finds himself practicing different signature Bond moves, such as the Roll-and-Shoot. To those wishing to follow in his (or Bond’s) footsteps, DeCaro advised them to, “Get a suit. If you want to be awesome, be a James Bond impersonator.” DeCaro has not yet informed friends of his hobby, but he expects the public to be surprised. He said, “Hopefully your jimmies are shaken, not stirred.”

Cardinals win National Championship

Jonathan Crighton
Staff Writer

With people throughout the world watching, Louisville outlasted Michigan, 82-76, in an absolute classic that
will instantly go down as one of the best national championship games in a long time.

In what was the perfect way to end an unpredictable, thrilling season, this game had it all. It had under-the-radar bench players catching fire in the first half. It had the superstar point guards stepping up down the stretch. It had thundering alley-oop dunks. It had back-and-forth, scintillating action, and everyone but Rick Pitino's squad was disappointed to see it come to a finish.

What to do during spring

Sarah Muzzillo
Editor-in-Chief

As the weather warms and trees begin to bloom, many look forward to the transition from chilly winter to warm, sunny spring. With this seasonal change comes fun activities to enjoy during spring.

Go to festivals. To celebrate spring, towns tend to take advantage of the nice weather by holding various festivals. Peakfest, an arts and crafts festival, in downtown Apex attracts thousands of locals each year. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 4, visitors can enjoy a variety of foods, musical performances, and purchase different art products. Parking is typically difficult, so make sure you arrive early. Also, consider attending downtown Cary’s Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival on April 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be arts and crafts, food, as well as an Earth Day exhibition, where you can learn about protecting the environment.
Planting flowers is a fun way to freshen up your yard.

Plant flowers. Want to give your yard a fresh, new look just in time for spring? Designing and creating a flower bed is not simply your grandmother's pastime. Take advantage of the warm, sunny weather, be creative, and get your hands dirty. Local nurseries, such as Lowe’s Hardware and Home Depot, carry a variety of flowers which are sure to brighten up your yard. For tips and tricks on planting flowers, visit:

Visit a farmers’ market. As the weather begins to warm, farmers’ markets start selling fresh foods just in time for spring. The State Farmers Market, located in Raleigh, has a wide selection of organic fruits and vegetables sold by N.C. farmers, as well as vendors who sell unique art products and delicious foods, such as organic honey, pastries, and different cheeses. Other local markets, such as Cary’s and Apex’s, provide local foods, live music, as well as cooking demos each week.

Media sympathizes with Steubenville perpetrators

Nicholas Chupka
Staff Writer

Nicholas Chupka
If you haven’t heard of the recent Steubenville, Ohio rape tragedy, you’ve probably been either living under a rock or grounded from technology. Two high school football players, Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, were both sentenced to one year in a juvenile detention center for rape. Mays was sentenced to one
extra year for illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.

CNN is currently under blast by many for their coverage of the Steubenville verdict. During the coverage, CNN news anchor Candy Crowley said, “A sixteen year-old now sobbing in court. Regardless of what big football stars they are, they still sound like sixteen year-olds. The thing is when you listen to it and you realize, they could stay until they’re twenty one.” Okay, we get it. They were football stars, but now they’re sex offenders getting what they deserve. What about the sixteen year-old girl who was humiliated and violated in front of thousands?

Twitter is for the birds

John Santos
News Editor

We are connected to the Internet all times of the day. Although the internet has helped us a great deal, being
John Santos is no longer a twitter user.
connected all the time can become unhealthy. Smartphones have allowed us to check social media anywhere and at any time. In a survey conducted by Boost Mobile among young people ages 16-25, 68% of those surveyed admitted to checking their social media profiles 10 times a day. When we begin to shape the way we think and act over something as useless as a Twitter profile, that’s when a problem arises.

I recently deleted my Twitter profile. I frequently used to spend any minute of downtime trying to think of some witty comment, anything to get precious retweets. The concept of receiving constant reinforcement for your most basal opinions in the form of virtual Twitter points known as “retweets” or “favorites” consumed much of my free time. I accumulated over 10,100 tweets in a period of about two years.

After deleting my profile, I filled the void of Twitter with a journal to write my ideas down. This way I could write down and remember my ideas without the seeking attention aspect.
