Super Bowl looms on the horizon for eight playoff teams

The 48th edition of the Super Bowl will be held on February 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. After a crazy Wild Card Weekend, only eight teams remain in the hunt for the Lombardi trophy. Here are our picks for the Super Bowl.

Michael's pick:
For this year’s Super Bowl, I pick the Broncos over the Seahawks, with the Broncos winning their first Lombardi Trophy since John Elway’s 1999 championship.

The Seahawks have been a solid team for a few years now, with sparks of greatness showing in past playoffs (their 2011 upset of the Saints in the Wild Card round as the prime example).  The Seahawks have now put all the pieces together to make that type of run a regular occurrence, and this will be the year that they use this cohesive unit to advance all the way. However, the powerful defense of the Seahawks, dubbed “the Legion of Boom,” has not met a passer like Peyton Manning this season. Manning has managed to break astronomical passing records this year, his second with the team. In their first season with Manning, the Broncos advanced to the AFC championship game, but lost in one of the greatest games in the history to the Ravens. This year will be different, however, with the team having more experience as a group. This should lead the dynamic Denver offense all the way to MetLife Stadium to give Manning a second ring.

Score prediction: Broncos 34, Seahawks 31

Adam's pick:
For Super Bowl XLVIII, I pick the San Francisco 49ers over the Denver Broncos, giving the 49ers their first Lombardi Trophy of the Jim Harbaugh era.

The surging 49ers will fight their way past Carolina in the divisional round and pull out an improbable victory in Seattle to advance to the Super Bowl, while the Broncos will get through San Diego and New England on their way to the big game. The game would feature a perfect storyline: Peyton Manning’s record breaking Denver offense against Aldon Smith and the uncompromising San Francisco defense. The unstoppable force versus the immovable object. In this case, the 49ers defense will come up with just enough stops to allow quarterback Colin Kaepernick and their dangerous offense to pick apart the Broncos’ suspect defense. It will be close and it will be exciting, but San Francisco will pull away in the end and defeat Denver to win the Super Bowl and redeem last year’s loss.

Score prediction: San Francisco 30, Denver 27
